Hermann-Oberth-Raumfahrt-Museum

OpeningstijdenToegang vanaf € 5 Deels toegankelijk

Over het museum

The rocket pioneer Hermann Oberth, whose theoretical work from the 1920s onward helped lay the foundations of spaceflight, spent the late decades of his life in Feucht near Nuremberg. In 1971, two years after the first Moon landing, members of the Hermann-Oberth-Gesellschaft founded a museum here, which considers itself one of the oldest independent space museums in Central Europe. To this day it is run by volunteers of the Verein Hermann-Oberth-Raumfahrt-Museum association.

Since 1989 the municipality (Markt) of Feucht has provided the museum with an outbuilding of the Pfinzingschloss, with about 160 square meters of exhibition space on three levels. The permanent exhibition was redesigned between 2012 and 2014; since 2014 the museum has been a member of the International Astronautical Federation.

The tour spans from Jules Verne's visions of spaceflight through Oberth's calculations and experiments to the space technology of the 20th century. Exhibits include Oberth's conical nozzle, a model of the rocket he planned for a UFA film, the Kumulus and Cirrus sounding rockets developed in the early 1960s, models up to the Space Shuttle, and a spacesuit worn by German astronaut Ernst Messerschmid. Outside stands a Swiss Zenit research rocket. Besides loans and private collections, the museum is based on Oberth's papers, which it looks after together with an archive on the history of spaceflight. The association regularly holds the Tag der Raumfahrtgeschichte (Space History Day) at the Pfinzingschloss.
