Over het museum

The house in the Loschwitzgrund valley goes back to a watermill first mentioned in the 16th century, which ground flour until the 1870s. In 1879, the landscape painter Eduard Leonhardi (1828–1905), a pupil of Ludwig Richter, bought the property, replaced the mill and stable buildings with a studio building, and extended the residence with a studio. In the early 1880s, the young painter Charles Palmié gave the half-timbered house its playful painted decoration with mottoes and ornaments; since then it has also been known as the "Rothe Amsel" (Red Blackbird).

Leonhardi wanted to offer young colleagues affordable living and working space here, but the artists' community soon fell apart. Instead, in 1885 he opened a museum displaying his own landscape paintings.

In September 1963, Dresden artists around Günter Tiedeken formed a working group that organized its own exhibitions in the skylit hall of the studio building. By 1990, more than 100 self-organized shows had been held there, repeatedly bringing the group into conflict with East German cultural policy and the Stasi (state security service).

Since 1991, the Leonhardi-Museum has been a municipal gallery, today part of the Museen der Stadt Dresden (Dresden City Museums). It reopened in 2003 after two years of renovation. Solo and thematic exhibitions, often with a regional connection, rotate in the large hall and the side galleries, while the Leonhardi-Atelier, set up in 1994, permanently displays paintings by the museum's namesake. Concerts of contemporary music round out the program.
