DampfLandLeute Museum Eslohe
Technology and local history museum in the Sauerland with working steam engines, a museum railway and sections on farming, crafts and village life.
Over het museum
As early as the beginning of the 1970s, residents of Eslohe collected folk-life objects with the aim of creating a museum; the Museumsverein Eslohe (museum association) was founded for this purpose in 1975. In 1981 the Maschinen- und Heimatmuseum (machinery and local history museum) opened with an initial folk-life section and the power engine collection of Eslohe manufacturer and museum founder Eberhard König, who had assembled steam engines as well as diesel and gasoline engines.
A second construction phase followed in 1990, showing agriculture from work with hand tools to the use of machines, complemented by a gallery of village crafts. A third phase finally brought the permanent exhibition together under one roof, with one hall each for forest, village and home, and for the power engines. Since 1987 the Christine-Koch-Mundartarchiv, an archive of the Sauerland Low German dialect, has also been affiliated with the museum.
In fall 2006 the exhibition space grew by more than 1,000 square meters when two halls of the former machine and link chain factory were converted; the permanent exhibition "Es werde Dampf!" opened the same year. Under the name DampfLandLeute, the museum now presents the technological, rural and everyday history of the Sauerland on more than 2,000 square meters.
The collection includes around a dozen steam engines and steam pumps from the late 19th century to the 1960s, a steam road roller and six locomotives, among them a fireless steam storage locomotive from 1920 and a Krauss steam locomotive from 1898. On the steam days in May and September the machines run under real steam, and a museum railway operates on the grounds.
