Museum am Dom Trier
Museum of the Diocese of Trier in the former Prussian prison, known for the Constantinian ceiling painting from a palace beneath the cathedral.
Over het museum
The idea of a Christian museum in the vicinity of Trier Cathedral goes back to around 1850. The Diözesan-Museum was finally opened on October 3, 1904, in side rooms of the cathedral cloister. The foundation consisted of altar remnants, tombs, and furnishings from the cathedral and the Liebfrauenkirche, which had been collected in a lapidarium since the 18th century, as well as loans from parishes of the diocese.
From 1943, systematic excavations began on the Domfreihof and later in the cathedral itself. In 1944 the cloister was partly destroyed in air raids, and part of the holdings was damaged with it. In 1952 the merger with the new department for archaeology and building research created the Bischöfliches Dom- und Diözesanmuseum. The most famous piece of the museum comes from the excavations: a ceiling painting from a late antique residential palace, which was reassembled from about 30,000 fragments in over ten years of work.
Since 1988 the museum has had its seat in the former royal Prussian prison of 1832/33, which in the Nazi era also served as a transit station for deportees. In 2010 it was reconstituted by statute as an institution of the Diocese of Trier and renamed "Museum am Dom Trier." Since 2015 it has also provided scholarly care for the cathedral treasury.
The permanent exhibition combines archaeology and art history: models and finds explain the early Christian church complex of the 4th century, joined by epitaphs, bishops' tombs, medieval sculptures, images of Christ and Mary, and contemporary works that are deliberately placed in dialogue with the old art.
