Everyday life and the spirit of the times in 1920s Trier, between French occupation, inflation, fashion, sports, and the avant-garde – with loans and mementos from local residents.
Small-scale exhibition marking August Sander's 150th birthday, about his apprenticeship years in the garrison town of Trier and photography around 1900.
Over het museum
The municipal collection was founded on donations from Trier citizens who gave their private art holdings to the city in the 19th century. Around 1900, a large collecting campaign gathered historical objects from the public; the resulting show in the Rotes Haus on the Hauptmarkt led to the official founding of the Museum der Stadt Trier on October 2, 1904.
After World War I, city conservator Friedrich Kutzbach gave the collection a modern profile. In 1935 the Nazis removed him from office, moved the museum to the Electoral Palace (Kurfürstliches Palais), and sold numerous works that did not fit their ideology.
After 1945, the collection moved into the Simeonstift next to the Porta Nigra – a collegiate building founded in the 11th century in honor of the hermit Simeon, which Kutzbach had earlier saved from demolition and reconstructed. The Stadtmuseum reopened there in 1958. In 2007 the old building was renovated and a modern extension for special exhibitions was added, designed by architects Dieter and Lukas Baumewerd.
Today, across five levels, the museum presents Trier's history through paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, fashion, Coptic textiles, and small East Asian sculptures. In 2025 the foyer was redesigned to be accessible.
