Over het museum
The museum arose in 1907 with the Verein für Heimatkunde in Wilhelmsburg, founded at that time. Members rescued furniture, clothing and tools from farmhouses and cottages that had to make way for workers' housing at the Reiherstieg in the course of industrialization. The collection first found space in a room of the town hall, and from 1911 in the water tower. In 1942 the pieces were brought to the attic of the Amtshaus in Kirchdorf, in which the museum later took its own rooms.
The Amtshaus was built in 1724 on the foundations of a small castle erected around 1606 by the noble Grote family, whose moat and vaulted cellar are still preserved. Duke Georg Wilhelm of Braunschweig-Lüneburg had acquired the property in 1650 and named the diked islands Wilhelmsburg after himself.
On its 100th anniversary in 2007, the association renamed itself Museum Elbinsel Wilhelmsburg e. V.; in the same year the café "Eléonore" opened. The exhibition showed, among other things, a Wilhelmsburg kitchen, dairy farming and vegetable growing, shipbuilding at the Reiherstieg, the school history of the island and the storm surge of 1962. Since about 2019 the house has been closed for a comprehensive renovation; after reopening, a permanent flood exhibition is also to be shown. In the meantime, the "Museum auf Wanderschaft" (museum on the road) keeps the island's history alive with lectures and exhibitions at other locations.
