Museum Nienburg traces its origins to a foundation in 1903; since 1908 it has been run by the Museumsverein für die ehemaligen Grafschaften Hoya, Diepholz und Wölpe (museum association for the former counties of Hoya, Diepholz and Wölpe), which today has around 650 members. From the outset, the museum collected testimonies from the town and district of Nienburg, including many craft and household items from the early days of industrialization.
After World War II, during which some of the evacuated holdings were lost, the collection was housed from the 1950s in the Neoclassical residence of the architect Emanuel Bruno Quaet-Faslem, which the Hoya-Diepholz'sche Landschaft (regional cultural body) has made available to the museum since 1954. Since 1985 the association has also used the Fresenhof, a Burgmannshof (castle vassal's manor) essentially rebuilt around 1610, whose history goes back to the 13th century.
Today the Fresenhof presents regional history from the Paleolithic to the present, including finds from the Old Saxon cemetery at Liebenau, as well as a visible storage area. The Quaet-Faslem-Haus focuses on art, architecture and the 19th century, with highlights such as French ceiling wallpapers from around 1830, a Rococo pulpit from Wittlohe and works by the Nienburg painter Ernst Thoms.
In the garden of the Quaet-Faslem-Haus stands a 17th-century hall house moved here from Dolldorf, which has been home to the Niedersächsisches Spargelmuseum (Lower Saxony Asparagus Museum) since 2005; its exhibition was completely renewed in 2023. The museum also includes a lapidarium, the reconstructed Biedermeier garden, a burial mound field, and a library and photo archive. In 2018 the museum was awarded the museum quality seal of the Museumsverband Niedersachsen und Bremen.
