Picture exhibition of friendship postage stamps designed by children and teenagers from Ukraine for an international painting competition.
The collection of today's police museum was assembled from 1987 onward. In 2001 it opened to the public as the Polizeigeschichtliche Sammlung Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony Police History Collection) in a former production hall of the radio manufacturer Telefunken in Hannover-Ricklingen, initially run by the police training institute and from 2007 by the Polizeiakademie Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony Police Academy). A friends' association was also founded in 2001 and still supports the museum's work today.
In November 2011 the museum moved to Nienburg/Weser, the headquarters of the Police Academy. Since then it has occupied two gabled houses in the old town on Lange Straße, right next to the tourist information office, presenting around 700 square meters of exhibition space on two floors. Volunteers welcome visitors; according to the museum, more than 14,000 people visit each year.
The permanent exhibition includes a historical tour from the beginnings of police order in the 15th century to the early Federal Republic, a section on police motorization after 1945 with vehicles, an area on the work of the criminal investigation department, and a separate section on the case of the Hanover serial killer Fritz Haarmann. Regular changing and loan exhibitions, as well as lectures by the research center for police and democracy history, complement the offering, including topics on the police under National Socialism.
