Anniversary exhibition marking the discovery of the Mithras cult relief in 1926 and the founding of the museum: history of the find, research, and the spread of the Mithras cult in the Rhine-Main-Neckar region, complemented by a wind installation by Farangis Yegane.
Over het museum
It all began with a chance find: in 1926, construction work in Dieburg uncovered the cult relief of the Roman god Mithras, carved on both sides and originally designed to rotate. As a result, the town took over a substantial collection of Roman finds for the first time, which gave rise to the local history museum. In 1951 the Bachgau-Museum Schaafheim was incorporated, greatly expanding the folk culture collection in particular.
That same year, the district and town museum moved into Schloss Fechenbach on the edge of the old town. On the site of a medieval castle-retainer's seat, the Ulner von Dieburg family had built a Baroque palace in 1717; in 1841 it passed to the barons of Fechenbach, who remodeled it in late Neoclassical style around 1860. During the town's comprehensive renovation, medieval foundations as well as Baroque and historicist wall and ceiling paintings came to light, and a modern extension enlarged the exhibition space.
Since its reopening on June 30, 2007, the tour has spanned the Neolithic period to the 20th century. The focus is on the Roman era, when Dieburg was the main town of an administrative district, with a reconstructed mithraeum and dining room. Other sections cover the Middle Ages, the nobility, pottery, the blue-dyeing craft, and a grocery store from around 1910. In 2025 the museum welcomed 6,307 visitors, making it one of its best years since the reopening.
