Over het museum

The idea for the Phänomenta came from physicist Lutz Fiesser, who from 1985 onward developed experiment stations at the Pädagogische Hochschule Flensburg (Flensburg University of Education) where visitors could try out natural phenomena for themselves. By 1988, around 100 such stations had been built at the university.

In 1993 the project moved into its first rooms on Norderstraße; its official launch is considered to be the opening by Schleswig-Holstein's education minister Marianne Tidick on August 3, 1995. Over the following years the center grew considerably: in 2002 the neighboring former savings bank building was added, in 2003 the "Haus der Kommunikation" (House of Communication) opened, and in 2007/08 an extension with a striking blue glass façade followed next to the historic Nordertor gate.

Today some 200 stations on several floors invite visitors to crank, pull, push and marvel. The center is run by the Phänomenta association, which works together with the Europa-Universität Flensburg. The Flensburg concept has served as a model for many other science centers in Germany, including the Phänomenta in Lüdenscheid.
