Over het museum
The museum's roots go back to 1893: Gustav Roscher, then head of the criminal police and later police president, set up a teaching collection in the Stadthaus on Neuer Wall, on which aspiring police officers were trained using real cases. This collection was not public; most of it was lost in the air raids on Hamburg in 1943 and was rebuilt after the war in changing locations.
Today the museum uses a utility and canteen building, completed in 1938, of the former Mackensen barracks on Carl-Cohn-Straße. After 1945 the buildings first served Danish and British units, and from 1957 the Hamburg police, whose state police school used the building as a canteen until 2006. After a thorough renovation, the exhibition on criminal cases in the attic level was presented first in 2010; since February 2014 the museum has been regularly open to visitors.
On three floors it deals with the transformation of the Hamburg police over about 200 years, with methods of forensic science, and with eight nationally known investigations. Interactive stations such as a halved patrol car, a helicopter simulator, and a reconstructed 1960s police station make the visit vivid for children too. The building is on the grounds of the Akademie der Polizei Hamburg and is supported by the Polizeiverein Hamburg.
