Over het museum

In the 18th century, the clothmaker and merchant Johann Heinrich Scheibler made Monschau fine cloth a luxury article traded across Europe. Around 1760 he had an imposing double house built on the Rur that combined living and business: the family lived in the part called "Zum goldenen Helm" (At the Golden Helmet), while production and trade were run from the part called "Zum Pelikan" (At the Pelican), with the counting house, storeroom, and wool washing in the cellar.

Six generations of the family lived in the house over about 200 years. From 1909, the fifth and sixth generations reassembled the furnishings from heirlooms and purchases. In 1963 the Scheiblers, together with the Rhineland Regional Council (Landschaftsverband Rheinland, LVR), founded a foundation that maintains the listed building and makes it open to the public.

Thirteen fully furnished rooms in the style of Rococo, Louis Seize, and Empire show upper-middle-class domestic culture, from the kitchen with copper kettles to the ballroom with a stucco ceiling. Famous is the cantilevered oak staircase spanning three floors, whose banister depicts the work steps of cloth production in 21 carved scenes.

With funding from the LVR, the "Zum Pelikan" section of the house was redesigned: four themed rooms there explain pre-industrial cloth production, the family's trade network, and the importance of the soft water of the Rur. The house is a stop on the cross-border Wool Route of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine.
