Over het museum

Elector Frederick the Wise had the house on Katharinenstraße built in 1493/94 over an even older cellar. It served as the residence of the priest of his altar foundation of the New Holy Cross in the neighboring town church and is the last of what were once about fifteen priests' houses between Hartenfels Castle and the market – and the only pre-Reformation priest's house in Torgau preserved in such completeness.

In the early years of the Reformation, the elector transferred the altar benefice to his secretary and court preacher Georg Spalatin, a confidant of Luther. Spalatin moved into the house, where Wittenberg reformers also visited until 1525; in 1525 it passed into his ownership. After he moved to Altenburg, it was rented to the town's first schoolmaster for girls, and later craftsmen and workers lived in it.

From 2011, the Förderverein für Denkmalpflege in der Stadt Torgau (association for the preservation of historic monuments in the town of Torgau) secured the building and restored it largely true to the original. On International Museum Day, May 21, 2017, the exhibition "Klang & Glaube" opened. It is part of the Torgau Museum Trail of the Stadt- und Kulturgeschichtliches Museum (Museum of Town and Cultural History): on the ground floor the focus is on the composer and "Urkantor" (original cantor) Johann Walter, while the upper floor with the restored priest's room is devoted to Georg Spalatin.
