Stadtmuseum Fellbach
Fellbach town history in a half-timbered house of 1685, with the MörikeKabinett and photographs by Hansel Mieth and Otto Hagel – free admission.
Over het museum
The Stadtmuseum Fellbach is housed in a stately half-timbered house on Hintere Straße, which the baker Jakob Ebensperger had built in 1685 as a residence with a bakery and wine shop. Later the surgeons Johannes Irion and Heinrich Koch ran a practice with a pharmacy here and at the same time cared for people with mental illness; from 1899 the property belonged to a gardener, who set up a greenhouse with a steam boiler and a small bathhouse.
In the 1970s the town bought the building and in 1977 opened a museum of local history. After a fundamental redesign, the house reopened in fall 2011. The hallmark of the new concept is the dialogue between present and past: every room leads from a present-day connection back into history.
The permanent exhibition on three floors covers the village's Pietist character, the Auberlen family of teachers and musicians, Fellbach's path to becoming a town, persecution under National Socialism and the life of the winegrower Marie Frech, whose parlors have been preserved. In addition there are photographs by the LIFE photographers Hansel Mieth and Otto Hagel, who came from Fellbach, as well as the MörikeKabinett on Eduard Mörike's stay in 1873 and on the Fellbach Mörike Prize.
In 2014 the museum was nominated for the European Museum Prize, and in 2019 it received the award "Vorbildliches Heimatmuseum" (Exemplary Local History Museum). At least twice a year, special exhibitions are created together with associations and groups from the town.
