Stadtmuseum Ingolstadt
City museum in the fortress building Kavalier Hepp with archaeology, city and contemporary history of Ingolstadt, industrial history, and a toy museum.
Over het museum
The museum's beginnings go back to a historical society founded in 1865, which under Franz Xaver Ostermair secured the city archive and collected antiquities. The holdings were initially kept in the Old Town Hall and the Kreuztor; from 1904 the city provided the former Hohe Schule. Soon afterward a first museum guide appeared, highlighting the city's book of privileges and the so-called Swedish white horse (Schwedenschimmel) as the main attractions.
In 1925 the collection moved to the Neues Schloss and was rearranged chronologically there. After damage in World War II, the exhibition was restored by 1954; in 1965, however, the museum had to vacate the palace for the Bavarian Army Museum.
Since January 1981 the Stadtmuseum has been located in the Kavalier Hepp, a building of the Bavarian state fortress constructed from 1838 to 1843, which remained largely unchanged during the conversion. In around 50 rooms the exhibition spans the Stone Age, the Bronze Age with the famous amber necklace, Celts and Romans, the ducal residence and university city, and the fortress and industrial city of the present. The toy museum was added in 1989. Today the museum is part of the Zentrum Stadtgeschichte, which also includes the city archive and the scholarly city library in the same building.
