Central museum on more than 1,100 years of history and culture of the Germans in Bohemia, Moravia and Sudeten Silesia – a new building on the high bank of the Isar in Munich.
OpeningstijdenToegang vanaf € 5 Rolstoeltoegankelijk
On the 80th anniversary, the show examines the forced resettlement of more than two million Sudeten Germans from Czechoslovakia ordered by the victorious Allies in 1946 and questions how orderly it really was. With catalog and accompanying program.
Over het museum
The Sudetendeutsches Museum is devoted to the history and culture of the German-speaking population of Bohemia, Moravia and Sudeten Silesia, the territory of today's Czech Republic. It is run by the Sudetendeutsche Stiftung (Sudeten German Foundation), with funding from the Bavarian State Ministry for Family, Labor and Social Affairs. The foundation had been collecting objects for such a museum since 1998.
The new building stands directly next to the Sudetendeutsches Haus on the high bank of the Isar in the Au district, not far from the Gasteig. The cornerstone was laid on September 16, 2016, and the museum opened on October 12, 2020. The building, with its light sandstone facade, was designed by pmp Architekten; about 1,200 square meters on five levels are available for the exhibition.
The permanent exhibition, developed between 2016 and 2020, uses some 900 objects and more than 30 media stations to lead from the Middle Ages to the present: from home, faith, economy and culture through the conflict of nationalisms to expulsion, the postwar period and new beginnings. It also tells of the centuries-long coexistence of Germans, Czechs and Jews. One focus of the collection is items that people took with them when they fled or were expelled; the museum also takes over holdings from local heritage collections (Heimatstuben) that have been dissolved and advises those who look after them.
In 2023, the museum was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award. Criticism came from the historian Martin Schulze Wessel, among others, who argued that the role of many Sudeten Germans in the breakup of Czechoslovakia and under the Nazi occupation is not addressed sufficiently.
