Over het museum

The small brick house at the corner of Preysingstraße and Wolfgangstraße was built toward the end of the 18th century on the edge of a gravel pit. It was a typical Herberge (lodging house) of the Au and Haidhausen suburbs: day laborer families each owned their own small living unit in it, an early form of condominium. Of the roughly 150 houses of this kind once found in Haidhausen, most gave way to larger apartment buildings between 1890 and 1960 or were lost in World War II.

The Häusl (little house) is named after the wood and coal merchant Johann Üblacker, who bought it in 1894. In 1966, the City of Munich acquired the dilapidated property from his heirs; people lived in it until 1974. The district committee (Bezirksausschuss) rejected the already approved demolition, the house was added to the list of historic monuments, and from 1977 it was restored for about 580,000 DM.

It opened as a museum on July 12, 1980. Two furnished rooms, with loans from the Münchner Stadtmuseum, show how a day laborer family lived and slept. The former goat stable became an exhibition room where changing exhibitions of contemporary art are shown about eleven times a year; the upper floor serves as an apartment for the caretaker of the house.
