Synagoge Freudental
Neoclassical rural synagogue of 1770 in Freudental, today a place of learning and remembrance with an exhibition of genizah finds; visits by arrangement.
Over het museum
After Jewish families were allowed to settle in Freudental from 1723, the community at first used a prayer room in the so-called Judenschlössle. After a first building that quickly fell into disrepair, the present synagogue was built in 1770 in the neoclassical style. As early as 1926 it was protected as a historic monument.
During the November pogrom of 1938 the interior was ransacked and the ritual objects were publicly burned; the building itself remained standing. The local municipality bought it in 1943, returned it after the war, acquired it again, and in 1955 sold it to a craft business, which converted it. At the end of the 1970s demolition had already been decided.
In 1980 committed citizens from Freudental, Löchgau, and the surrounding area founded a support and sponsoring association, which acquired the building and, with the support of the district of Ludwigsburg, restored it in keeping with preservation requirements over several years – the synagogue with women's gallery, Renaissance tower, outbuilding, and vaulted cellar. During the renovation in 1983, numerous writings, books, and textiles of a genizah came to light in the attic.
Today the Pädagogisch-Kulturelles Centrum (PKC) runs the building as an educational and meeting place with tours, learning days, concerts, and a guesthouse. On the women's gallery, original documents from the genizah are exhibited, showing the everyday life of rural Jews over more than two centuries.
