Over het museum

The Werra mine lies at the Rudolfstein near Bad Weißenstadt in the Fichtelgebirge, where a tin ore and uranium deposit occurs. It began with an 18th-century tunnel that was probably used to search for cassiterite. Between 1929 and 1945, the focus was mainly on tin and tungsten.

From 1949 to 1957, the mine was expanded under the innocuous name "Zinnerz-Untersuchungsbetrieb" (tin ore investigation operation) to a depth of 280 meters and almost four kilometers of tunnel length. Behind the cover name was also the extraction of uranium ore, which began after the war despite Allied restrictions. Work continued until 1975, and the facility was finally shut down in 1990.

After extensive renovation, in which, among other things, the tunnel entrance was secured and an outdoor area was created, the mine opened for tours on July 6, 2016. Today about 300 meters of tunnel can be walked; even on the access path of about one kilometer, the formation of the deposit is explained. From October to April the mine remains closed because several bat species hibernate there. The mine is part of the Geopark Bayern-Böhmen.
