Over het museum

The Batterie Todt, first called Batterie Siegfried, was built by the Germans near Cap Gris-Nez, facing England. It has four 380 mm artillery guns in concrete casemates and can fire up to 42 kilometres, while Gris-Nez and Dover are 29 kilometres apart. It was named after the engineer Todt, who died in an air crash in January 1942, and was inaugurated in February 1942 in the presence of senior admirals of the German navy. Turm I, where the museum is housed, fired its first shell on January 20, 1942.

The battery came under the Kriegsmarine. It was active from February 12, 1942, protecting the passage of large warships along the coast, and its activity intensified after the June 1944 landings. On September 29, 1944, the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division attacked it after the liberation of Boulogne. The general assault began around 06:45, white flags appeared at 10:30, and the garrison surrendered.

The Musée du Mur de l’Atlantique was set up in one of these bunkers by the Davies family more than fifty years ago. It immerses visitors in the everyday life of German soldiers during the war, with uniforms, objects and military equipment. The bunker stays cool in summer, which is welcome in hot weather.
