Over het museum
The Casemate d’Esch is a fortress work of the Maginot Line on the edge of the village of Hatten. In 1939–1940 it was occupied by the 23rd Fortress Infantry Regiment.
In January 1945, the casemate was at the heart of the Battle of Hatten-Rittershoffen, in which German and then American troops attacked it. Bullet and shell impacts are still visible on the concrete.
The museum set up in the fortress work traces the casemate’s role within the Maginot Line, the 1939–1940 campaign and this battle, which is presented as one of the last major tank battles of the Second World War. It is run by the Association des Amis de la Ligne Maginot d’Alsace.
