Over het museum
On the Belcastel hill a pre-Romanesque chapel stood around 750; in 940 it was protected by a surrounding wall built by Oldoric I of Panat. The castle is first mentioned in 1031 in a notarial deed. During the Hundred Years’ War it changed hands several times without ever being taken by assault. In 1391 the lordship passed to Guillaume de Saunhac, whose family was among the most powerful in Rouergue until the early 17th century.
After the death of Marie de Saunhac in 1615, the castle was gradually abandoned. In 1810 it was bought and used as a quarry, and the west façade collapsed in the early 20th century. The Lapeyre family bought it in 1926, and it was listed as a historic monument in 1928.
In 1973 the architect Fernand Pouillon discovered the ruins. He restored them between 1974 and 1982 using techniques close to those of the Middle Ages: without a crane, reusing mostly stone from the site, while adding concrete staircases and large glass windows. He made it his private residence and recreated the moat, the drawbridge and the entrance. The castle was inaugurated on July 6, 1984, and Pouillon died there in 1986.
In 2005 new owners opened the castle to the public and held cultural events there. Another family acquired it in 2025 and continues to open it. Today the castle offers guided tours, medieval workshops, evening concerts, a guest room in a medieval suite and dinners. It belongs to the Club des Sites and the Plus Beaux Villages de France network.
