Over het museum
The Château de Montsoreau was built from around 1443 by Jean II de Chambes, adviser to King Charles VII, on the site of an older fortress. Work continued until around 1515, producing a building in the transition between Gothic and Renaissance styles, standing directly on the banks of the Loire.
The de Chambes family kept the estate until 1634; the Du Bouchet de Sourches family owned it from 1669 to 1788, and it was sold in 1804. The site became famous thanks to Alexandre Dumas’s novel “La Dame de Monsoreau”, written in 1845 and 1846.
Since April 8, 2016 the château has housed a museum of contemporary art. Its permanent collection, assembled by the collector Philippe Méaille, is presented as the largest ensemble of works by the Art & Language collective in the world. It is shown on two levels of the château and complemented by exhibitions, talks and events.
