Over het museum

The écomusée is housed in a former longère (long farmhouse), the Ferme du Routout, at the locality of Saint-Léonard in the commune of Vains. The Conservatoire du littoral acquired it in 1994 and entrusted its development and management to the Manche Department. The site opened in 2001 as the Maison de la Baie and became the Écomusée de la baie du Mont Saint-Michel in 2011. It is part of the network of sites and museums of the Department.

Located near the Pointe du Grouin du Sud and on the edge of salt marshes, it offers views over the bay, Tombelaine and Mont-Saint-Michel, a landscape listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The visit route, titled “Les hommes, la nature et les paysages de la baie”, begins with geology, then presents the fauna and flora in three areas: aquatic, terrestrial and aerial.

Two former human activities are highlighted: professional shore fishing and the production of sel ignifère. A reconstructed salt works, a building with a thatched roof, shows the stages of salt production. The collections of around 300 objects include fishing gear, resin inclusions of fish and plants, stuffed birds and about fifteen graphic works.
