Over het museum

The Bourrine du Bois Juquaud was built at the beginning of the 19th century following the building tradition of the Marais breton-vendéen: clay walls and a reed roof. It stands on the former dune ridge of Les Mathes, in a wooded area. Armandine Gandemer lived there until 1967, making the site a witness to a rural way of life that lasted until the middle of the 20th century.

The farm consists of the main bourrine and numerous outbuildings. Its restoration draws on testimonies gathered by the association Les Amis de la Bourrine, in cooperation with the Conservation des musées de Vendée. The interiors are furnished with furniture, tools and everyday objects from the early 20th century, to show how the inhabitants of the marsh lived.

The museum is now run by the commune of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez and holds the “Musée de France” label. Besides the buildings, the site includes a temporary exhibition room, a screening room and a waymarked path in the nearby forest. A new temporary exhibition is presented every year, and a butter-churning demonstration is held on Wednesdays.
