Over het museum
The Écomusée was founded in 1986 in Puget-Rostang, in the Alpes-Maritimes. It grew out of a revitalization effort that began in 1963, when the village had only about twenty residents left. The Maurin brothers, attached to their homeland, came back to settle there and founded the Friends of the Roudoule association (Amis de la Roudoule) in 1966, before the Écomusée’s own association was created.
The museum focuses on the Gavot cultural area, between the Estéron, the Ubaye, the Haut-Verdon and the Tinée, and between the Mercantour National Park and the Verdon and Préalpes d’Azur regional nature parks. Rather than being a simple gathering of prestigious collections, it develops research, publication and local outreach, drawing on its inhabitants.
The Maison de l’écomusée, in the heart of the village, offers 270 m² of exhibition space. The exhibitions are renewed every twelve to eighteen months and most often deal with routes of communication and exchange. The museum also has a slide show on the valley’s riches and a re-created wheelwright’s workshop, with forge and joinery. The collections hold more than 8,000 everyday objects; the Écomusée has a documentation center, a shop and the Musée de France label.
