Écomusée du Perche

Over het museum

The Écomusée du Perche occupies the priory of Sainte-Gauburge, founded in the year 1006 by a small community of monks and formerly a dependency (dépendance) of the royal abbey of Saint-Denis. The site has been listed as a historic monument since 1903. It includes a church with rich sculpted decoration (13th–15th century), the prior’s lodging with its historiated fireplaces (15th century), a turret decorated with scenes of apothecaries (16th century) and vaulted halls from the 13th century. After the Revolution, and for two centuries, the buildings served as a farm.

Since 1972 the museum has collected testimonies, objects and documents that tell the story of the people of the Perche. It covers agriculture, crafts and domestic life from the 19th century to the 1960s, and recreates the atmosphere of workshops of the past: farrier, saddler, joiner, pit sawyers and clog maker.

The écomusée is also a place of activity. It offers skills workshops (beekeeping, restoration of traditional housing, hedge laying (plessage), pottery, kitchen gardening), temporary exhibitions and major events such as the Fête de l'Arbre et du cidre.

The ticket gives access to the museum, the priory and the temporary exhibition. Free with proof for residents of Saint-Cyr-la-Rosière, journalists and teachers preparing a visit. Workshops and activities: prices on request. Payment in cash, by cheque, by bank card and with chèques-vacances.

The écomusée is in Saint-Cyr-la-Rosière, between Bellême and Nogent-le-Rotrou, about 150 km from Paris and 60 km from Le Mans and Alençon.
