Over het museum
The Espace des Mondes Polaires owes its existence to Paul-Émile Victor, a French explorer of Jura origin and one of the pioneers of modern ecology. From the 1970s he saw the upheavals threatening the Arctic and the Antarctic. The Prémanon site, in the Station des Rousses, now bears his name.
The polar museum presents a permanent exhibition that immerses visitors in vast icy landscapes. It brings together the ethnographic collection Paul-Émile Victor brought back from his expeditions, as well as drawings and sketches by his hand, and displays stuffed polar animals and Inuit art.
The route connects history, the life and earth sciences, ethnology, glaciology, economics and ecology to take stock of the polar regions and their future, for example that of the polar bear and the Inuit peoples. The building also houses a natural ice rink, used in winter and converted into a quad roller rink in summer, a café, a shop, a tourist office and an auditorium.
