Over het museum

The Fondation Fernet-Branca occupies the former Fernet-Branca distillery in the heart of Saint-Louis. The idea of creating a contemporary art venue here emerged in early 2003, during a visit by the mayor at the time, Jean Ueberschlag, with the architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte. In December 2003, a 23-year lease was signed with the Branca family, owners of the building, to create a museum there.

Wilmotte designed the fit-out in two phases. The first, completed in June 2004, made the building accessible to the public for exhibitions. The second concerned the first floor and the basement, in the former cellar where the original barrels still stand. The courtyard serves as the first outdoor exhibition space, and the galleries, separated by large white partition walls, surround it.

An association set up to animate the site became the Fondation Fernet-Branca in 2011. It presents contemporary art exhibitions and fits into the cross-border cultural environment of Saint-Louis, close to Basel, alongside the Fondation Beyeler, the Museum Tinguely and Weil am Rhein.
