Over het museum

The Gadagne site has had several lives since antiquity, first as a Roman warehouse and then, in the 14th century, as an early house known as the Maison de la Boysette. At the end of the 15th century the Pierrevive family rebuilt the buildings, before the Florentine bankers Gadagne bought the northern part of the block in 1545. The Renaissance complex, the largest in the city, has borne their name ever since.

Numbers 10, 12 and 14 of Rue de Gadagne were listed as historic monuments on October 5, 1920. On July 2, 1921, the Musée historique de la Ville de Lyon opened its first three galleries there, presenting collections previously housed in the Town Hall. In 1946, a project to create thematic museums in the regions, led by Georges-Henri Rivière, led to a puppetry museum being set up in Lyon, home of Guignol; it opened in 1950 within the same walls.

Gadagne was renovated between 1998 and 2009. It now houses two museums under one roof: the Musée d'histoire de Lyon (MHL), whose collections comprise around 80,000 objects and whose permanent displays were entirely redesigned between 2019 and 2023, and the Musée des arts de la marionnette (MAM), the only Musée de France devoted exclusively to this art. The building also includes a hanging garden, a café-restaurant on the top floor, a shop and an auditorium.
