Over het museum

The Guiscriff station museum is devoted to the memory of Breton railway workers and to the history of the Réseau Breton. In 1885 the Compagnie des chemins de fer de l’Ouest obtained permission to build a metre-gauge network from Carhaix, soon nicknamed the “star of Carhaix”. The lines were built from 1891 to 1925, and the network reached 427 km, making it the largest secondary network in France.

The railway lifted central Brittany out of its isolation: it made it easier to transport goods and to travel to fairs and markets. Decline set in from the mid-20th century, in the face of competition from road transport and the standard-gauge network. Today only one line of the Réseau Breton remains, between Carhaix, Guingamp and Paimpol.

The former Guiscriff station was renovated in 2009. It is owned by Roi Morvan Communauté and run by the association Ar Marc’h Du. The visit presents the railway workers’ trades and tools, rolling stock, freight traffic and life in central Brittany from the 19th to the 21st century, with audio testimonies, interactive kiosks, archive films and games. The site, on the voie verte no. 7 between Roscoff and Concarneau, also offers a café, an escape game, bicycle hire and accommodation in a 1926 sleeping car.
