Over het museum
Coal mining began in Petite-Rosselle in 1856. The Wendel and Vuillemin shafts were sunk from 1862; the mine was nationalised in 1946, and extraction ended at the Wendel site in 1989. In 1985 a centre for scientific and technical culture was created for the Lorraine coalfield; it received the site in 1988, and in 1991 the decision was taken to build a museum.
Work to prepare the site for visitors began in 1993. The underground galleries opened to the public in 2006, and the museum itself in July 2012, in the former administrative building of the mine, the oldest part of which dates from 1866. The headframe of Wendel shaft 2, listed as a historic monument, is the oldest metal headframe in the basin.
The museum trail follows the working day of a miner: the hanging room (salle des pendus), showers, lamp room and tag office. It presents around 160 objects, models, films and testimonies about 170 years of coal mining in Lorraine. The mine visit, led by former miners or mediators, descends in a cage to the galleries.
