Over het museum
The Flore (S645) is a Daphné-class submarine built in Cherbourg. It was launched in 1960 and entered active service in 1964. About 58 meters long, it sailed until 1989 and was very active during the Cold War. After its withdrawal from service, it was dry-docked on the Lorient slipway in 1995.
The submarine is displayed at the former Keroman submarine base. The German army had it built from 1940 to shelter its U-boats during the Battle of the Atlantic. The French Navy (Marine nationale) reused these concrete shelters from 1945 and remained there until 1997. Lorient Agglomération then redeveloped the site, renamed Lorient La Base, into a hub for offshore racing, tourism and history.
The site has been open to the public since May 1, 2010, and is managed by Sellor. The visit begins with a 450 m² interactive museum set up in a former alvéole of block K2. The route, made of sounds and images, presents the history of Lorient, the daily life of submariners and the history of the Flore. It continues aboard the submarine with an audio guide featuring recollections from former crew members.
