Over het museum
The association “Maison des Pierreux” was founded in 1993 in Massangis, in the Yonne department, to preserve the memory of the quarrymen. The commune’s quarries are still in operation today, and a viewpoint lets visitors see them from above.
The museum presents a permanent exhibition of tools, shaped stones and photographs. The route follows the work of stone from extraction to carving. Originally, this work was done with tools that required muscle power and ingenuity, which made it arduous and dangerous.
Visits are guided and commented. Today the museum welcomes visitors by reservation only, for groups of at least 10 people.
