Over het museum
The Maisons Satie bring together three 15th-century half-timbered houses in the heart of Honfleur. It was here that the composer Erik Satie was born, on May 17, 1866. The façades and roofs of the complex have been listed as historic monuments since 1992, and the site holds the “Maisons des Illustres” label of the Ministry of Culture.
The museum opened on June 21, 1998, Fête de la musique day, thanks to donations and patrons. It is an interpretation space rather than a conventional exhibition: the staging combines sound, light, image and objects in a whimsical, humorous setting, in keeping with the artist. Carrying an electronically controlled audioguide, visitors move through the rooms to the rhythm of Satie’s music, accompanied by commentary inspired by his writings and by everyday sounds. Video projections, quotations, calligraphy and works by contemporary artists punctuate the route, which also evokes the artists the composer worked with, such as Picasso, Picabia, Braque or Cocteau. The City of Honfleur manages the site together with its other municipal museums.
