Over het museum
In the night of April 1 to 2, 1944, after a train derailed at Ascq station, soldiers of the 12th SS Division Hitlerjugend killed 86 civilians aged 15 to 74. The massacre gave the town of Villeneuve-d'Ascq its identity; the town was originally to be called Villeneuve-en-Flandre.
The Mémorial Ascq 1944 stands on the main site of the executions. It recalls the event and places it within the history of the Occupation in the North of France. It is also a place of reflection on the fate of civilians during the war, and it seeks to convey a message of peace, tolerance and fraternity. Visitors can pick up the receiver of an original telephone switchboard, which rings as they pass and plays the conversation between the Ascq stationmaster and his colleague in Lille during the tragedy.
The memorial is run by the City of Villeneuve-d'Ascq. The education team offers self-guided visits or visits with an audio guide, guided tours and a walk through the streets of Ascq to the places of the tragedy, as well as educational programs for school groups, including a joint route with the Musée du Terroir.
