Over het museum
The Meneham site lies in Kerlouan, in the heart of the Pays Pagan in Brittany. Its origins date back to around 1756, when a guard house was built among the rocks to watch over the coast. For a long time it was attributed to Vauban, but several clues point instead to a construction ordered by the Duke of Aiguillon. Customs officers then settled there with their families.
From 1840 onward, farming families rented small houses, which they enlarged. The inhabitants worked the land, fished and gathered goémon (seaweed), which was burned in kilns to extract iodine, among other things. At its peak, the village had about 80 residents living in 14 houses. After the Second World War, the site's listing in 1975 and the wish for more comfort led to a gradual departure of the residents. The last one left the village in 2001.
In 1989 the commune of Kerlouan bought the hamlet, while the Finistère department acquired the neighbouring land to protect it. After a project launched in 2002, the faithful restoration took place from November 2004 to June 2009. Today the site is managed by the Côte des Légendes community of municipalities.
The hamlet now houses exhibition spaces in French, English and German on daily life, the history of the site and its links with the wider world, craft workshops, a holiday cottage, a bistro, and a reception area with a shop selling local products. The entire site is free to visit all year round.
