Over het museum

The Moulin du Vanneau is an ecomuseum devoted to rural life in the Puisaye, combined with a teaching farm. The site is organised around a water mill powered by the Branlin. This overshot-wheel mill still operates and is presented as the last working water mill in the Yonne département. After years of wear, major works restored its operation.

The museum brings together collections on daily life and fieldwork in the early 20th century: a reconstructed miller’s dwelling, old tools and farm machinery. During guided visits, children compare their own homes with the miller’s living quarters. The farm keeps about a hundred animals, including sheep, Jersey cows, pigs, goats, draught horses, ponies, donkeys and numerous poultry.

The Marais de Vanneau, in the upper Branlin valley, is a sensitive natural area managed together with the Conservatoire des sites naturels bourguignons; a walking trail allows visitors to explore it. A non-profit association under the 1901 law runs the site and promotes kindness to animals, respect for nature, the transmission of heritage and social openness. Since 1986, a harvest festival in the old style has been held every August. The Puisaye-Forterre tourist railway serves the site.
