Over het museum
The museum opened in 1959 in the castle of the Dukes of Bourbon in Montluçon, as a museum of local history and ethnology. In the 1960s and 1970s, gifts, deposits and purchases built up a large collection of hurdy-gurdies, which gave it a reputation as the hurdy-gurdy museum. In 1993 it acquired a collection of bagpipes. In 1997, an exhibition of electric guitars gradually steered the project towards amplified music.
The museum now covers popular music, from songs and dances of the rural world of the 19th century to rock, including brass bands (fanfares), musette, swing and jazz. The MuPop project, designed by architect Philippe Tixier, is run by Montluçon Communauté. It occupies two former private mansions in the medieval centre, the Hôtels Méchain and Charnisay, linked by a contemporary bronze extension that houses the entrance and the atrium. MuPop opened to the public on June 21, 2013.
Across about 3,300 m², the route presents around 2,000 objects drawn from a collection of 3,500 pieces. Each visitor chooses their music through an individual listening system made up of an open headphone and a pointer device, spread over about 150 self-contained listening points, roughly eight hours of music in all.
