Over het museum

Albert Schweitzer had the house in Gunsbach built with the Goethe Prize of the city of Frankfurt, which he received in 1928. It opened in 1929 and was meant to serve as the European base for his work: an apartment for the Schweitzer couple, an identical apartment for his collaborator Emmy Martin, and guest rooms on the top floor.

The museum and central archives were opened in 1967 by Ali Silver, a Dutch nurse who had come from Lambaréné. From 2017 the house was restored and extended; the work began in September 2017 and led to a closure of about twenty months.

The route today includes the house, whose ground floor has been returned to its state in Schweitzer’s time; the basement devoted to his African period and to the hospital in Lambaréné; and a new building, almost entirely underground and glazed, which houses the reception, the shop and a presentation of the philosophy of “reverence for life.” The archives hold around 80,000 letters, 35,000 photographs and 20,000 books.
