Over het museum

The Musée Armand-Viré presents the early history of Luzech and its surroundings. It is housed in the vaulted hall of the Maison des Consuls at 152 rue de la Ville, and its entrance is shared with the municipal media library (médiathèque). The commune presents it as a museum with the “Musée de France” label.

The first room is devoted to local archaeology. Hand axes, scrapers and other flint tools give an idea of how people lived in prehistory. At the end of the 19th century, the discovery of a murus gallicus, a Gaulish fortification wall, led to a series of excavations on the Impernal oppidum, the hill overlooking Luzech. They yielded many everyday objects from the 1st century BC: pottery, coins and bronze objects. The Gallo-Romans later occupied the same site, with a temple in the Celtic tradition and other buildings, as shown by tiles and ceramics. Recent work around the Romanesque church of Caïx has also revealed medieval and early modern finds.

The second room is devoted to palaeontology. It holds more than five hundred ammonites, extinct marine molluscs that disappeared at the same time as the dinosaurs and that geologists use to date rock layers. The museum also has a small lecture room, which hosts events several times a year and welcomes school classes and groups.
