Over het museum

The museum's collections come from scholars and learned societies of the 18th and 19th centuries, notably the Commission des Antiquités de la Côte-d'Or. The museum was first housed in the Hôtel Rolin, then in rooms of the Palais des États, where it received objects from excavations at the sanctuary of the source of the Seine.

In 1934 the collections moved into the former Benedictine dormitory, the last building of the Saint-Bénigne abbey. Its oldest part dates from the 11th century; the Maurist monks added a floor and a grand staircase in the 17th century. The museum became municipal in 1955 and gradually spread through the whole building, thanks to excavations and acquisitions.

The objects come from all over Burgundy, notably Dijon, Alesia, the sources of the Seine, Vertault and Blanot. The route covers prehistory, protohistory, Roman Gaul and the Middle Ages, with Romanesque and Gothic sculptures, Merovingian jewelry and oak ex-votos offered to the goddess Sequana.

Hoogtepunten

  • Wooden ex-votos offered to the goddess Sequana, from the sources of the Seine
  • Blanot Treasure, from the Bronze Age
  • Gold bracelet from La Rochepot
  • Romanesque and Gothic sculptures, including a fragment attributed to Claus Sluter
  • Free admission to the permanent collections
