Over het museum
The Gergovie museum opened its doors in October 2019 on the Gergovie plateau, near Clermont-Ferrand. It belongs to the public interest group “Gergovie, Cité des Gaulois”, which brings together the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, the Puy-de-Dôme Department, Mond’Arverne Communauté, Clermont Auvergne Métropole and the commune of La Roche-Blanche. Its mission is to protect and promote the Arvernian archaeological sites of Gergovie, Corent and Gondole, as well as Caesar’s camps.
The building, designed by architect Jean-Paul Reuillard, covers 1,200 m², including 600 m² of permanent exhibition. More than 250 archaeological objects and remains are presented with models, graphic supports and multimedia. The route covers the Gallic War and the battle of Gergovie, the history of the Arvernian people and their oppida, the archaeology of the plateau and the landscapes of Auvergne. An audiovisual room brings the battle back to life, and terraces offer a panoramic view over the Limagne plain, the Chaîne des Puys and the Sancy massif.
In 52 BC, Caesar besieged Gergovie, the fortified capital of the Arverni led by Vercingetorix. He was repulsed after suffering heavy losses, an episode that the only surviving account, Caesar’s Gallic War, presents from the Roman side. Excavations carried out on the plateau since the 19th century, and resumed more recently, make it possible to nuance this account, notably thanks to the discovery in 2015 of a large paved surface from the 1st century BC. The museum also offers guided tours on the plateau.
