Over het museum

The Jublains Departmental Archaeological Museum opened in 1995 in the heart of the ancient Gallo-Roman city of Noviodunum, capital of the Gaulish people of the Diablintes. It is run by the Mayenne department and holds the Musée de France label. Its display was partly renewed in 2002, and the department is now preparing a renovation of the permanent exhibition.

The museum presents the department's archaeological collections, from the Bronze Age to the early Middle Ages, with a strong focus on the Gaulish and Roman periods. The objects come both from old excavations at the Jublains site and from recent discoveries across Mayenne. Among them is the Bais hoard, made up of 14 axes and 6 Bronze Age bracelets, which entered the collections in 2017, as well as Gaulish coins, samian ware and fragments of statues from the ancient sanctuary.

The museum is the starting point for discovering the neighbouring archaeological site. Visitors can see the theatre, the baths, the monumental sanctuary and the Gallo-Roman fortress, whose wall is being restored. Visits remain possible despite the scaffolding. A twelve-stop trail links the monuments in the village.

One parking space in front of the museum is reserved, and a drop-off point is available in the entrance driveway; a bell to the right of the door lets visitors call for help. Toilets are accessible from reception. Reception has an induction loop, and a member of staff is trained in French Sign Language. Tactile tours and tours in sign language are available for groups on request one month in advance; easy-read leaflets accompany the temporary exhibitions. On the archaeological site and at the fortress, wheelchair access is difficult (slope, grass or sandy ground); a tactile model and a digital reconstruction compensate for this.
