Over het museum
Aristide Bergès was born on September 4, 1833, in Lorp, at the place called Prat du Ritou on the banks of the Salat. His father Pierre had installed the first continuous paper machine in the family mill there. The engineer is best known for his research into hydraulic power in the Alps, which he called “white coal” (“houille blanche”), but he also invented a hydraulic pulp defibrator for paper pulp, patented in 1864.
The old paper mill closed on July 30, 1999, when its last machine stopped. The Association Aristide Bergès, founded in 1996 by paper and printing professionals and enthusiasts, first saved the birthplace and its outbuildings, then fitted out the site as a museum. The birthplace and the paper mill have been listed as historic monuments since October 2, 2007, and the site has held the “Maisons des Illustres” label since 2014.
The visit presents the history of paper, its manufacture and uses, with a modern continuous production line, which the museum describes as unique in a Musée de France, and two old spiral pumps dating from Aristide Bergès's time. Visitors can also see a complete hand-bookbinding workshop, the printing works and an old wooden paper dryer said to date from around 1790.
