Over het museum
The Balaguier tower was built between 1634 and 1636 on the orders of Cardinal Richelieu to strengthen the defence of the Toulon roadstead against a possible Spanish attack. Together with the Tour Royale and the Éguillette fort, it formed one of the three main defensive works of the roadstead in the 17th century.
Vauban proposed improvement works in 1679, 1693 and 1700, which were never carried out. In 1703 the fort had about 20 cannons and a garrison of around 170 men. It declined from the middle of the 18th century, and modern artillery then made it unsuitable: it was decommissioned in 1877. Between the two World Wars, private individuals occupied it. The site still belongs to the French Navy and has been listed as a historic monument since March 17, 1975.
Since 1970 the fort has housed the municipal naval museum of La Seyne-sur-Mer, run by the town. The “Nouveau Balaguier” trail, opened on July 1, 2022, presents about 300 objects, most of them from underwater archaeology, lent in particular by the French Navy, Ifremer and the Louvre Museum. A botanical garden with ten themed areas, created in 2008, completes the visit and offers a view over the roadstead.
