Over het museum
The museum has a dual origin. In 1902, the sculptor Alfred Boucher, who had grown up in Nogent-sur-Seine, founded a first museum in his home town, with sculptures, paintings and ceramics donated by himself, by other artists and by the Sèvres manufactory. It was set up in a former château, and a sculpture gallery was added in 1905. After the Second World War the museum was looted and remained closed for a long time. It reopened in 1974 to show local archaeological finds, and the sculptures were once again showcased from the 1980s and 1990s onwards.
In 2003, an exhibition on Camille Claudel drew around 40,000 visitors in three months, which gave the City the idea of endowing its museum with a Claudel collection. After several acquisitions, the City bought in 2008 the collection assembled by Reine-Marie Paris and Philippe Cressent, as well as the monumental marble Persée et la Gorgone and the house where Camille Claudel lived with her parents from 1876 to 1879.
The Musée Camille-Claudel opened on March 26, 2017, in a building designed by the architect Adelfo Scaranello around that house. The route first presents a panorama of French sculpture in Camille Claudel’s time, thanks to the Dubois-Boucher collection and loans from fifteen institutions, followed by a section devoted to the artist’s work.
