Over het museum
The museum occupies an 18th-century house that belonged to the noble chapter of Remiremont, abolished during the Revolution. In 1828 the young magistrate Charles Friry moved in after his marriage. Passionate about history and art, he rescued objects linked to the town's monastic past and gradually built up a collection in his home. The house opens onto a park with two Baroque fountains and a century-old hornbeam hedge.
The collections were later passed down within the family, in particular to the collector's grandson, the landscape painter Pierre Waidmann, whose studio has been preserved. The house opened to the public in 1970 as a diocesan museum; the town took it over in the 1980s. In July 2020 the museum was extended with five new rooms and redesigned spaces.
The circuit presents medieval works (a processional cross with Limoges enamels, sculptures, stained glass), Lorraine, Italian, Flemish, French and Spanish paintings, prints by Rembrandt, Callot and Goya, faience, pewter, ivories and Audenarde tapestries. A hospital ward with its pharmacy, protected as a historic monument, holds a fine group of Lunéville faience. The museum bears the “Musée de France” and “Maison des Illustres” labels.
