Over het museum
The museum occupies the Romanesque church of Saint-Raphaël, built in the 12th century inside a fortified castrum, and its surroundings. The whole site is listed as a historic monument. The church's paintings date from the 19th century, its stained-glass windows are the work of the contemporary artist André Pierre Arnal, and the nave hosts temporary exhibitions throughout the year. In the crypts, the remains of three earlier churches can be seen, from Late Antiquity to the Romanesque period, along with early Christian tombs.
The visit begins on the ground floor with the area devoted to the sea. The room of classical archaeology and the amphora room tell the story of Roman maritime trade: the town counts more than forty ancient shipwrecks, the first of which were discovered in the 1950s, at the dawn of underwater diving. One room is dedicated to diving pioneers: the Scaphandre autonome of Commandant Le Prieur, invented in Saint-Raphaël in 1926, and the Cousteau-Gagnan regulator of 1945.
On the third floor, the first-humans area traces the lives of the hunter-gatherers of the Palaeolithic, the Neolithic peoples of the Estérel with their dolmens and menhirs, and finally the Celto-Ligurians. Outside, a garden preserves remains of the castrum's fortifications, an engraved Bronze Age menhir and a milestone from the Via Aurelia, as well as an educational kitchen garden of Mediterranean plants. The 13th-century tower, 30 metres high, offers a panoramic view after 129 steps.
