Over het museum
The museum traces its origins to 1833, when the curiosity cabinet of Édouard Eyssautier became the starting point for collections of weapons and ribbons, enriched by gifts and purchases. The aim was to bring together models useful to the town's manufacturers. In 1851 the purchase of the collection of Marshal Oudinot justified its installation in the Palais des Arts, built between 1856 and 1861 by the architect Dubuisson on the side of a former slate quarry.
In 1889 Marius Vachon reorganised the institution under the name Musée d'Art et d'Industrie, conceived as a training resource for local artists and draughtsmen. The Ogier bequest then added decorative objects, enamels, ivories, ceramics and furniture. After the Second World War, acquisitions turned to modern and then contemporary art, leading to the creation of the Musée d'art moderne (1987) and the Musée de la Mine (1992) at other sites.
In 2001 the museum reopened in a building renovated by Jean-Michel Wilmotte and refocused on decorative and industrial arts. It today holds three major collections of international significance: weapons, cycles and ribbons. It holds the “Musée de France” label, and its park contains a garden of dye plants.
